Seeking the Greatest Treasure.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today's Gospel contains three short but powerful parables: the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, and the fishing net. Though simple, these parables ask one important question:
What is the greatest treasure in your life?
In today's world, people spend their lives searching for wealth, success, recognition, security, and happiness. Yet Jesus tells us that there is one treasure worth more than everything else—the Kingdom of God.
1. The Hidden Treasure
Jesus says:
"The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."
Notice the man's reaction. He does not hesitate. He joyfully gives up everything because he has found something far more valuable.
This teaches us that knowing Christ is the greatest treasure we can ever possess.
Many people spend years chasing things that do not last:
- money,
- fame,
- power,
- possessions.
These things can be useful, but they cannot satisfy the deepest longing of the human heart.
Only God can.
As Saint Augustine beautifully said:
"Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord."
2. The Pearl of Great Price
Jesus tells another story:
"A merchant searching for fine pearls finds one pearl of great price. He goes and sells all that he has and buys it."
Unlike the first man, who discovers the treasure unexpectedly, the merchant has been searching.
This reminds us that people come to God in different ways.
Some discover Christ unexpectedly through an experience or encounter.
Others search for years before finding Him.
But once they truly encounter Christ, they realize that nothing compares with Him.
The saints understood this well. They gladly sacrificed comfort, wealth, and even their lives because they had found the "pearl" that gives eternal joy.
3. What Are We Willing to Give Up?
Both parables involve sacrifice.
The treasure is free in one sense, but obtaining it requires letting go of lesser things.
Jesus asks us:
- What am I holding onto that keeps me from following Christ more closely?
- Is it pride?
- Is it greed?
- Is it resentment?
- Is it sinful habits?
- Is it excessive attachment to worldly things?
Following Christ sometimes requires difficult choices, but what we gain is infinitely greater than what we leave behind.
4. The Net Cast into the Sea
In the final parable, Jesus compares the Kingdom to a fishing net that gathers fish of every kind.
When it is full, the fishermen separate the good fish from the bad.
This reminds us that God welcomes everyone into His Kingdom.
The Church is made up of saints and sinners, strong believers and weak believers, people at different stages of faith.
But Jesus also reminds us that there will be a final judgment.
God is patient and merciful, giving everyone time to repent, but one day each of us will give an account of our lives.
This is not meant to frighten us but to encourage us to live each day faithfully.
5. Becoming Wise Disciples
Jesus concludes by saying:
"Every scribe who has been instructed in the Kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old."
A true disciple treasures God's Word and knows how to apply it to daily life.
Faith is not merely something we hear on Sunday.
It is something we live:
- in our families,
- at work,
- in school,
- in our communities.
We are called to bring the wisdom of the Gospel into every aspect of our lives.
Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters,
Today's Gospel asks each of us a personal question:
What is my greatest treasure?
If Christ truly is our treasure, then everything else finds its proper place.
May we seek God's Kingdom above all else.
May we have the courage to let go of whatever keeps us from Him.
And may we one day share in the eternal treasure that He has prepared for those who love Him.
Let us remember the words of Jesus:
"Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides." (Matthew 6:33)
