You Are the Salt of the Earth and the Light of the World.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Last Sunday, Jesus taught us the Beatitudes — the attitudes of a true disciple.
Today, He tells us what those disciples are meant to be in the world:
“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.”
Jesus does not say you should be; He says you are.
1. Salt: Giving Meaning and Preserving Goodness
Salt has two main purposes:
- it gives flavor
- it preserves food from decay
Jesus uses this image to describe our Christian life.
A Christian should:
- give meaning to the world
- preserve goodness, truth, and moral values
👉 If our faith makes no difference in how we live, then we have “lost our taste.”
2. Losing Our Saltiness
Jesus warns:
“If salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?”
We lose our “saltiness” when:
- we compromise our faith
- we remain silent in the face of injustice
- we live like everyone else without reference to Christ
👉 Faith must be lived, not hidden.
3. Light: Meant to Be Seen
Light is not meant to be hidden.
Jesus says:
“No one lights a lamp and puts it under a bushel basket.”
Light:
- shows direction
- removes fear
- exposes darkness
As Christians, we are called to:
- reflect Christ’s light
- guide others through love and good example
4. Not for Praise, But for God’s Glory
Jesus gives us the purpose of being salt and light:
“That they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Our good works are not for pride or recognition, but to lead others to God.
👉 When people see kindness, honesty, forgiveness, and faith, God is glorified.
5. Our Mission in Daily Life
We are salt and light:
- in our families
- at work
- in school
- in society
We don’t need to do extraordinary things — just ordinary things with love and faith.
Conclusion
Dear friends,
Jesus reminds us today that the world needs our faith.
May we never lose our saltiness,
may we never hide our light,
and may our lives always point others to God.
Amen.
