Tempted, Yet Faithful.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As we continue our journey in the sacred season of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and repentance. And the Church immediately takes us into the desert with Jesus.
The Gospel tells us that:
“Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.”
This may surprise us. Jesus is led by the Spirit — not away from difficulty — but into it.
Lent is our spiritual desert.
1. The Desert: A Place of Testing
The desert in the Bible is not just a physical place.
It is a place of:
- silence
- struggle
- purification
- encounter with God
Before Jesus begins His public ministry, He spends forty days in prayer and fasting.
Lent is our forty days.
👉 Before mission, there must be purification.
2. The Three Temptations
The devil tempts Jesus in three ways — and these temptations are still very real for us today.
1️⃣ Turn stones into bread
This is the temptation of physical comfort and materialism.
“Use your power for yourself.”
Jesus responds:
“Man does not live by bread alone.”
We are more than our physical needs.
2️⃣ Throw yourself down from the temple
This is the temptation of pride and testing God.
“Prove yourself. Force God to act.”
Jesus replies:
“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.”
Faith is trust — not manipulation.
3️⃣ Worship me and gain the kingdoms of the world
This is the temptation of power and compromise.
“Take shortcuts. Avoid suffering.”
Jesus answers:
“The Lord your God shall you worship, and him alone shall you serve.”
There are no shortcuts to glory.
3. Jesus Fights with Scripture
Notice something important:
Jesus does not argue emotionally. He responds with God’s Word.
This teaches us that:
- Prayer strengthens us
- Scripture protects us
- Fasting disciplines us
Lent is a training season for the soul.
4. The New Adam
In the Garden of Eden, Adam failed when tempted.
In the desert, Jesus — the New Adam — remains faithful.
Where humanity fell, Christ stands firm.
And because He conquered temptation, He gives us the grace to overcome ours.
5. Our Lenten Journey
Lent asks us:
- What tempts us most?
- Where are we weakest?
- What needs conversion?
This is not a season of sadness, but a season of renewal.
The desert is not the end.
After the desert comes the Resurrection.
Conclusion
Dear friends,
The First Sunday of Lent reminds us that temptation is real — but so is grace.
If we:
- pray sincerely
- fast with purpose
- trust in God’s Word
we too will overcome.
May this Lenten journey purify our hearts and prepare us for Easter joy.
Amen.
