Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven Is at Hand
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As we continue our journey through Ordinary Time, today’s Gospel shows us the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. His first words are clear and challenging:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
These words summarize the whole mission of Christ.
1. Light Shines in Darkness
Matthew tells us that Jesus begins His ministry in Galilee, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah:
“The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light.”
Galilee was considered a place of mixed cultures and weak faith. Yet Jesus chooses this place to begin His mission.
👉 This reminds us that God’s light shines even in broken places — and in broken hearts.
2. Repentance: A Change of Direction
To repent does not only mean to feel sorry.
It means to change direction, to turn away from sin and turn toward God.
Repentance is:
- an ongoing process
- a daily decision
- a response to God’s invitation
👉 Jesus’ call is not a threat, but an invitation to freedom.
3. The Call of the First Disciples
Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, and John — ordinary fishermen.
He says:
“Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
They respond immediately.
This shows us:
- God calls ordinary people
- God transforms what we already have
- God asks for trust, not perfection
👉 Following Jesus requires courage and readiness to let go.
4. Leaving Nets Behind
The disciples leave their nets — their security, their comfort, their old life.
Each of us has “nets” that hold us back:
- sin
- fear
- bad habits
- attachments
Jesus invites us to trust Him enough to let go.
5. Our Response Today
Jesus is still calling today:
- in our families
- in our workplaces
- in our parishes
He calls us to:
- repent
- believe
- follow
- witness
The Kingdom of God is not far away — it is already among us.
Conclusion
Dear friends,
The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time reminds us that Jesus is the light, and He calls us by name.
May we respond generously, leave behind whatever separates us from Him, and follow Him faithfully.
Amen.
