Do Not Be Afraid.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In today's Gospel, Jesus repeats one message three times:
"Do not be afraid."
Fear is one of the most common human experiences. We fear:
- failure,
- rejection,
- illness,
- uncertainty,
- the future,
- even death.
The disciples also had reasons to be afraid. Jesus was sending them into a world that would not always welcome them. They would face opposition, persecution, and misunderstanding.
Yet Jesus tells them:
"Do not be afraid."
These words are addressed not only to the disciples but also to us today.
1. Fear Can Paralyze Us
Fear is a powerful emotion.
When we allow fear to control us:
- we stop taking risks,
- we avoid doing what is right,
- we become silent when we should speak,
- we lose confidence in God.
Many Christians today struggle to live their faith openly because they fear criticism or rejection.
But Jesus reminds us that discipleship requires courage.
Faith is not the absence of fear; it is trusting God in the midst of fear.
2. God Knows and Cares for Us
Jesus uses a beautiful image:
"Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge."
Then He adds:
"Even all the hairs of your head are counted."
What a comforting thought!
God knows us personally.
- He knows our struggles.
- He knows our worries.
- He knows our dreams.
- He knows our pain.
Nothing in our lives escapes His attention.
If God cares for sparrows, how much more does He care for His children?
3. Our True Value
Jesus says:
"You are worth more than many sparrows."
In today's world, many people measure their worth by:
- wealth,
- appearance,
- achievements,
- popularity.
But our value comes from something much deeper.
We are precious because:
- God created us,
- Christ died for us,
- the Holy Spirit dwells within us.
Our worth does not depend on what others think of us.
It depends on God's love for us.
4. Courageously Witnessing to Christ
Jesus says:
"Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father."
Being a Christian is not meant to be a private matter.
We are called to witness to Christ through:
- our words,
- our actions,
- our choices,
- our way of life.
Sometimes this may require courage.
It may mean:
- standing up for truth,
- defending the dignity of others,
- remaining faithful when it is unpopular.
The world needs Christians who are not ashamed of their faith.
5. Trusting God's Providence
The Gospel teaches us that God is always in control, even when life seems uncertain.
This does not mean that difficulties will disappear.
The disciples still faced persecution.
But they faced it with confidence because they knew that God was with them.
The same promise is given to us.
Whatever challenges we face:
- family problems,
- financial struggles,
- health concerns,
- spiritual battles,
God walks with us.
Conclusion
Dear brothers and sisters,
The message of today's Gospel is simple and powerful:
"Do not be afraid."
God knows you.
God loves you.
God cares for you.
Therefore, trust Him.
May we have the courage to live our faith openly, to witness boldly to Christ, and to place our lives confidently in the hands of our loving Father.
And whenever fear tries to overwhelm us, may we hear Jesus saying:
"Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
