The Voice of the Good Shepherd.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Today, the Church celebrates what is commonly known as Good Shepherd Sunday. In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses a simple but powerful image:
“I am the gate for the sheep… whoever enters through me will be saved.”
This image of the shepherd speaks deeply about our relationship with Christ.
1. Jesus the Good Shepherd
In biblical times, a shepherd:
- knew each sheep personally
- protected them from danger
- led them to food and water
- stayed with them day and night
Jesus presents Himself as that Shepherd.
👉 He knows us personally.
👉 He cares for us deeply.
👉 He leads us to life.
We are not just part of a crowd — we are known and loved individually.
2. The Voice of the Shepherd
Jesus says:
“The sheep hear his voice… they follow him because they recognize his voice.”
This raises an important question:
👉 Do we recognize the voice of Christ?
In today’s noisy world, many voices compete for our attention:
- social media
- opinions
- peer pressure
- worldly values
But the voice of Jesus is different:
- it leads to peace
- it speaks truth
- it calls us to love and holiness
We recognize His voice through:
- prayer
- Scripture
- the teachings of the Church
3. The Gate to Life
Jesus also says:
“I am the gate.”
A gate is an entrance — it determines who comes in and who goes out.
👉 Jesus is the only true way to salvation.
👉 Through Him, we find protection and freedom.
He says:
“I came so that they might have life, and have it more abundantly.”
Not just existence — but fullness of life.
4. False Shepherds
Jesus warns about thieves and robbers — those who come to harm, mislead, or destroy.
Today, false “shepherds” can be:
- ideologies that reject God
- influences that lead us into sin
- anything that pulls us away from truth
👉 Not every voice deserves to be followed.
5. Our Response
This Sunday invites us to reflect:
- Do I listen to the voice of Christ daily?
- Do I follow Him, even when it is difficult?
- Do I trust Him as my Shepherd?
We are also called to reflect Christ to others:
- parents guiding children
- leaders guiding communities
- Christians guiding one another in faith
Conclusion
Dear friends,
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, is calling each of us today.
May we learn to recognize His voice, follow Him faithfully, and trust that He is leading us to life.
And may we always remain close to Him, the Shepherd who never abandons His sheep.
Amen.
