Recognizing Christ in the Breaking of the Bread.

April 19, 2026

Recognizing Christ in the Breaking of the Bread.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today’s Gospel presents one of the most beautiful resurrection stories — the journey of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

It is a story not just about them…
👉 It is a story about us.

1. Walking Away in Disappointment

The two disciples are leaving Jerusalem.
They are sad, confused, and discouraged.

They say:

“We were hoping…”

Their hopes seem shattered because Jesus has died.

How often do we feel like this?

  • when prayers seem unanswered
  • when life does not go as planned
  • when hope turns into disappointment

👉 Sometimes, we too “walk away” — not physically, but in our hearts.

2. Jesus Walks With Them — Unrecognized

As they walk, Jesus Himself draws near — but they do not recognize Him.

This is very important.

👉 Jesus is present, even when we do not realize it.

He walks with us:

  • in our struggles
  • in our confusion
  • in our daily lives

But like the disciples, we can be so focused on our problems that we fail to see Him.

3. The Word Opens Their Hearts

Jesus begins to explain the Scriptures to them.

“Were not our hearts burning within us…?”

Before they recognize Jesus with their eyes, they experience Him in the Word.

👉 When we listen to Scripture, Christ speaks to us.
👉 The Word prepares our hearts to encounter Him.

4. The Breaking of the Bread

Finally, at the table, Jesus takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them.

At that moment:

“Their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.”

This is a clear reference to the Eucharist.

👉 We recognize Christ fully in the breaking of the bread.

The same pattern happens at every Mass:

  1. Liturgy of the Word
  2. Liturgy of the Eucharist

5. From Discouragement to Mission

Immediately, the disciples get up and return to Jerusalem.

They move from:

  • sadness → joy
  • doubt → faith
  • escape → mission

An encounter with the risen Christ always leads to action.

6. Our Journey Today

This Gospel invites us to reflect:

👉 Are we walking with Christ, even when we don’t recognize Him?
👉 Do we listen to His Word?
👉 Do we encounter Him in the Eucharist?

Christ is still walking with us today — especially:

  • in Scripture
  • in the Eucharist
  • in our daily lives

Conclusion

Dear friends,

Like the disciples, may our hearts burn when we hear God’s Word,
and may our eyes be opened in the breaking of the bread.

And once we recognize Him, may we go out and share the joy of the Resurrection with others.

Amen.
